GeneSight evaluates certain genes involved in medication metabolism and response. The report organizes medications into categories based on identified gene-drug interactions and provides clinical considerations that may help inform your provider’s treatment decisions.

GeneSight does not diagnose a mental-health condition, identify a perfect medication, predict whether a medication will work, or replace clinical judgment. Genetics is only one of several factors that may influence medication response and side effects.

A medication listed in the green category is not guaranteed to work, and a medication listed in another category is not automatically unsafe or ineffective. GeneSight states that results should supplement a comprehensive clinical assessment. Official GeneSight report guidance.

WHAT TO EXPECT

A simple test with results reviewed by your provider

GeneSight testing begins with a provider consultation to determine whether the test may be appropriate for your care. If ordered, a sample is collected using a cheek swab and submitted to the GeneSight laboratory. When the report is available, your provider reviews the results with you and explains how the information may—or may not—affect your treatment plan.

1. Provider Consultation

Discuss your symptoms, medication history, previous treatment experiences, and whether GeneSight testing may offer useful additional information.

2. Cheek-Swab Collection

A DNA sample is collected from the inside of your cheek and submitted to the testing laboratory for analysis.

3. Results Review

Your provider reviews the report with you and considers the findings alongside your complete clinical picture before making treatment recommendations.

GeneSight® results do not guarantee medication effectiveness or freedom from side effects. Do not start, stop, or change medication based on a test report without consulting your prescribing healthcare provider. Insurance coverage and patient costs may vary; confirm current benefits and potential financial responsibility before testing.
